چکیده

Turkic languages are an integral part of the linguistic landscape of present-day Caucasia, both north and south of the mountain ridge. Different from the so-called “autochthonous” Caucasian languages, i.e. the languages pertaining to the Kartvelian (South-Caucasian), (North-)West Caucasian and (North-East) Caucasian families, both the southern (Oghuz) and the northern (Qypchaq) idioms of Turkic stock are generally believed to have entered the area in relatively recent times only. Nevertheless there are clear indications of contacts between Caucasian and Turkic peoples in antiquity, witnessed to by historical sources from the area itself. The present paper deals with one of these traditions, viz. that of the “Bun-Turks” mentioned in Old Georgian historiography.
